Karen Yurkovich, who has taught Painting and Drawing at SACI since 2004, was recently appointed Director of SACI’s MFA in Studio Art program. A citizen of Canada, for many years Karen resided in Perugia, and she now lives in Florence and Vancouver. Her artwork has been exhibited worldwide, most recently in one-person exhibitions at the Linda Hodges Gallery in Seattle, the Bau-Xi Gallery in Vancouver, and Studio d’Arte Raffaelli in Trento.
Karen received both her BFA and MFA degrees from the University of Alberta, and has taught there as well as at Emily Carr University of Art & Design. She was awarded a Vancouver Foundation Grant that enabled her to study scagliola and plaster casting in Italy and an Alberta Heritage Scholarship that funded her study of painting and sculpture with Giovanni Manuali in Perugia. Her drawings and paintings are in public and private collections in Europe and North America.
“I am very excited about the MFA at SACI,” says Karen, “as it allows the students two full years to develop their work in a European context and to develop wide-ranging contacts. Having worked in Italy since 2000 and maintaining an active North American practice, I will draw on this and my knowledge of the historical and contemporary art environment to hopefully provide the students with a broad perspective of the creative and professional possibilities.”
