Centro di Cultura Contemporanea Strozzina – Florence, Italy
Admission is free, 7-11pm

On Thursday, January 15, 2015, the Centre for Contemporary Culture Strozzina at Palazzo Strozzi, Florence, will be hosting a spectacular new event devised by the New York collective CHERYL, that takes an ironical and provocative look at society, art and contemporary culture.

With live performances and videos, the artists create an authentic happening in the shape of a surreal retrospective in which time and space are altered, overturning the rules and shattering the stereotypes of traditional museums and art exhibitions. Glitter, music, dance and costumes are the ingredients of this imaginary trip towards a parallel reality where anything is possible. CHERYL transforms the CCC Strozzina space into a succession of videos, installations and performances, involving visitors in a unique experience that recounts the group’s work to date and records new experiments in which the artists interact with the public.

Visitors, who are invited to don a mask, find themselves immersed in the surreal atmosphere of such videos as White Cube, an ironic parody of the art gallery world in New York City, or Tropical Hospital, a surreal reflection midway between reality and dream. Inside the CCC Strozzina’s rooms the artists also involve the public in collective actions and in exploring the venue’s totally deconstructed and altered spaces.

The artist collective CHERYL was founded in New York City in 2008, and the collective’s current members include Destiny Pierce, Nick Schiarizzi and Sarah Van Buren. The group creates videos and performances mingling irony with institutional criticism, offering unusual takes and surreal reflections on the concepts of art, the museum and the art exhibition. CHERYL has produced performances and happenings for such celebrated museums as the Museum of Modern Art, PS1, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Brooklyn Museum in New York City, the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, Islington Mill in Manchester, Off Limits Gallery in Madrid, La Escocesa in Barcelona, Galeria Zé dos Bois in Lisbon, Palais Paradiso in Amsterdam.

The new project that CHERYL has produced for the CCC Strozzina is one of the most important retrospectives of their work to date, thus offering the city of Florence a unique opportunity to get to know one of the most innovative underground artistic groups on the New York scene.
