ANISH KAPOOR – ‘Descension’

Galleria Continua, San Gimignano – ITALY
Through September 5, 2015

Its only fitting to install Anish Kapoor’s endlessly swirling whirlpool, Descension in San Gimignano’s Galleria Continua. If you are planning a trip to the picturesque Tuscany town of San Gimignano, near Siena, be sure to escape the tourists and visit Galleria Continua, one of the most important international galleries of contemporary art with other locations in Beijing and Les Moulins (France).

Descension tirelessly sweeps the viewer into the perception of a deep dark and unknown depth of water draining into the earth’s interior. The constantly rotating void is a transitional space which pushes the boundaries of conceptual sculpture. Form and space wrestle with the concepts of self-awareness and eternity.

Anish Kapoor - Untitled 2015, Stainless steel, 140 x 140 x 22 cmThe rest of the exhibition of the same name, Descension, includes a series of new sculptures made from alabaster, a material native to the not too distant area. These volumes have been carved into the stone of ethereal and translucent quality. In other areas of the gallery, a vast former cinematic theater, Kapoor’s stainless steel and painted fiberglass sculptures are mounted on the walls, reflecting and engaging the viewer within the space.

British-Indian artist Anish Kapoor has another major installation, Kapoor Versailles (from June 9 – November 1, 2015) at the Palace of Versailles and the surrounding gardens. This exhibition, not without criticism for some of his more challenging concepts, includes another version of Descension, this time installed out doors. The dark pool, however, is more evocative in an indoor context which would seem more unexpected.
