Daniele Nannini: Animal Portraits

September 10 – October 26, 2015

Opening Reception: Thursday, September 10 at 6pm

Born in Turin, 1950, Daniele Nannini has a Degree in Humanities from the University of Pisa. He currently lives and works in Florence as illustrator, painter, and sculptor. As an illustrator, his field of interest has focused on publishing with a relevant role in illustrating for advertising, game publishers, and public utility.
Nannini frequently illustrates for children’s books published in Italy, France, Greece, Iran, Japan, Spain and Swizerland for other authors as well as for his own books and series where he acts as designer, illustrator, and author.

A member of the SACI Artists Council, Nannini taught illustration at SACI from 1986 to 1989 and from 1996 to 2000. In 1992 he was the instructor of “Children’s Book Illustration,” a public education course organized by the Regione Toscana.

Daniele Nannini - King KongIn recent years he has oriented his work towards new techniques of expression – painting in acrylic on canvas and creating 3D artworks using both traditional materials such as cardboard or wood, and innovative ones such as syntetic sponge made by polyester foam. His goal is to deepen, from another angle, what has always been the central theme of his work: the analysis of the relationship between man and animal, and more generally between man and nature of which it forms part.

The prime theme of my work can be summarized in the relationship between man and animal. This should be understood as a contradiction within the individual, between the man and the animal inside him, both in the sense of the conflict of interest between the dominant species, Homo Sapiens, and all the others with which it shares a land that rotates, or tries to turn, in his self image and likeness.
