Studio Art Centers International is proud to offer a special two-week workshop for alumni and friends. Located beneath the Apuan Alps in Seravezza, participants will have the unique opportunity to learn the rich history of the area while gaining practical experience working with the white marble for which it is famed.

Sculptor John Taylor

John Taylor

Sculptor and SACI professor John Taylor will provide instruction through a series of visits to quarries in Carrara where Michelangelo obtained stone for his masterpieces, the town of Pietrasanta where participants can meet the artisans who bring contemporary sculpture to life, and of course, Florence. Studio practice at the Arkad Foundation will consist of drawing and carving in an investigation of spatial awareness, using both traditional and modern techniques.

Nestled at the point where the rivers Sera and Vezza meet, Seravezza was a favorite destination of the Medici family who built a summer palace there in 1564. Still standing exactly as in the painting above, it lies across the road from a former industrial factory in use since the 14th century. The building now houses the Fondazione Arkad, an artist-owned studio facility and cultural center.

Take the time this spring to meet up with old and new creative companions and discover the part of Tuscany where the story of Renaissance sculpture began!
