UNDERWATER: Objects & Artifacts Restored by SACI

October 18 – November 10, 2016

OPENING: Tuesday, October 18 at 6pm

The Conservation faculty at Studio Arts College International (SACI) restores with students archaeological artifacts, murals, paintings, frames, and other objects with the goal of contributing to the community by collaborating with cultural institutions, museums, and private owners of these damaged objects. SACI Conservation students are guided by their instructors, Dr. Roberta Lapucci, Nora Marosi, Stefano Garosi, and Alessandro Gori, who trained them in use of materials and techniques. The instructors teach SACI students how to examine and work on damaged paintings and objects, note changes resulting from time and adverse environmental conditions, and resolve problems through ethical restoration procedures.

November 4, 2016 marks the 50th anniversary of the historic and devastating Florence Flood. For this occasion, the exhibition Underwater: Objects & Artifacts Restored by SACI documents the restoration by SACI instructors and students of a number of cultural treasures damaged by flood waters, including the paintings Saint Jerome (attributed to Polidoro da Caravaggio) and Bronzino’s Madonna with Child and Saint John; Florence’s Santa Maria degli Angeli chapel; and Novilara’s Picenian tombs.
