MAPPING: a collective view on identity / society / territory

Hana Sackler (SACI Alum, MFA in Photography ’16), is one of three artists featured in “Mapping: a collective view on identity / society / territory,” opening at Lato Prato in Prato, Italy, this Thursday, December 8th at 6:00 pm.

This September, Hana was one of 20 artists chosen to exhibit in SlideLuck Prato, from which three finalists were selected for the upcoming show, “Mapping: a collective view on identity / society / territory,” curated by SEDICI at Lato Prato.

Featured in MAPPING: “The Edges of Us,” by Hana Sackler, “Parco,” by Synapsee, and “Homeland,” by Georgs Avetisjans

Hana’s series, “The Edges of Us,” approaches presence, absence, family and identity. The work was recently featured in Yet Magazine.

I turn my glance outward and externalize private moments. I look at the members of my family in relation to myself, exploring the complexities and emotional layers of the family dynamic. Closeness, detachment, absence, and presence. Our identity is removed, and what remains are the gestures and the relationship between the body and the space it exists in. Everything is ambiguous as I project my perception of reality. Often a small portion of the body is visible, and isolated in darkness, while other images are close.

It is a cycle of emergence and withdrawal.

Hana Sackler is originally from Brooklyn, New York. She recently received her MFA in Photography from Studio Arts College International in Florence, Italy. She works with video, sound, and still images investigating the themes of perception, identity, absence, and presence. She is part of an international photographic collective called Scaleno, and currently lives in Berlin, Germany.
