Sculptor Evan Morse (SACI, Spring 2008) was recently named a recipient of a Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Fellowship in the Sculpture/Installaton/New Genres category. Morse is one of only 16 artists out of 285 applicants to have been chosen to receive the $12,000, allowing him to spend even more time on his sculpture.

The sculptures he submitted for the grant application, all completed in 2016, show people relaxing on couches in a series called Domestically Enthroned, many of which have already been included in exhibitions at Danforth Art in Framingham, MA; The Scollay Square Gallery in Boston City Hall, Boston, MA; The Arsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown, MA; Wheaton College in Norton, MA; and Clark University in Worcester, MA.

Evan will also be spending March, April, and May of this year in Carrara, Italy, home of the famed marble quarries, where he will have studio space for continuing his sculpture. We look forward to seeing what he creates during these months!

Evan Morse studied in Florence at Studio Arts College International (SACI) in 2008. After graduating from Wheaton College (MA) in 2009, he continued his study in sculpture, traveling to places as varied as Vermont, Jamaica, China and returning to Italy to learn from a great variety of artists before earning his M.F.A. from Boston University in 2015. Morse generally practices the traditional sculpture methods of clay-modeling, plaster-casting and stone-carving, though he has experimented with a variety of media. Morse lives and works in Newton, Massachusetts.
