SACI Alum Christina Gednalske (MFA 2015) Selected as Finalist for Celeste Prize

SACI Alumna Christina Gednalske (MFA, 2015) has been selected as a finalist for the prestigious Celeste Prize for her video piece Family Picture Night.

Curated by Fatoş Üstek, this edition of the Prize has recognized 53 artists as finalists across several categories and discliplines, all of whom will have their work exhibited from October 6-8, 2017 at The Bargehouse, OXO Tower, in London during Frieze Art Fair week. As a finalist, Christina is in the running for a cash prize as well as an exhibition at one of the Prize’s twelve partner galleries.

In Family Picture Night, which pairs found footage of an annual family tradition and text written by the artist, Christina explains, “A family, a home, and a past reality are revisited in the images and sounds left behind, deconstructed and re-contextualized to fit the present and confront a ubiquitous dilemma – how and what to remember.” Christina first began to develop the piece while in SACI’s MFA program in 2015, noting that the video came about in part due to her relocating to Florence, which lead her to reflect on the concept of “home and places [she] could no longer return to, and on the impact of family, loss, memory in [her] work.”
